MAP, Southern US, D'Anville

[ translate ]

Colonial Southern United States. D'Anville/Santini, Partie Meridionale de la Louisiane, avec la Floride, la Caroline et la Virginie, par le Sr. d Anville, from Atlas Universel, 1784 (published). Hand Color. This is an interesting Italian version of D'Anville's map of the Southeast. It is most notable for the incorrect boundaries showing a huge Louisiana extending eastward to include present-day Kentucky, Mississippi, and Alabama. The boundary between the Carolinas and Florida is shown at the Alatamaha ou George R, and Georgia is not delineated, but is named (Georgie). In the left border of the map is the note of Presidio Espagnol de la Prov. de Tecas in modern-day Texas. Good detail of towns and cities, Indian villages and tribes, rivers, portages, forts, harbors, and early place names. Second state, published by Remondini.
Dimensions: 18.7 x 22.5 in
Condition Report: A nice impression on a sturdy sheet with contemporary outline color in the map and later color in the cartouche. There is light printer's ink residue and an archivally repaired centerfold separation that enters 3 cm into image at bottom. The bluish shadow along the centerfold is caused by our scanner and doesn't appear on the map itself. The paper is generally very bright. Grade: A
