[TORNIELLO, AUGUSTINO]. Situs Partium Praecipuarum Totius Orbis Terrarum. [Milan: circa 1609]. Double-page etched map, the image 7 1/2 x 14 5/8 (19 x 37 cm); the full sheet 14 x 15 1/4 inches (36 x 39 cm); framed. Slightly toned from mat, some minor creasing.

An interesting world map which first appeared in Torniello's Annales Sacri et Profani, 1609. In the map the four continents are presented in an oval with wind-head decoration to the spandrels. North America is named America Mexicana and South America as Peruiana with indication of the Strait of Magellan. The island of Madagascar is named St. Laurence, and large blank areas to the north and south indicate the Arctic and Antarctic. This is the first state of the map before the additional naming of Nova Guinnea and further decoration to the spandrels. Shirley, Mapping of the World 267.
