MARCEL DAMBOISE (Marseilles, 1903-Paris, 1992).
"Portrait of Daniele Damboise".
Marble.
Exhibitions: "European sculpture in the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014.
Size: 16 cm (sculpture) + 3 cm (base).
At the Salon des Indépendants, Damboise had the privilege of meeting artists such as Despiau, Maillol and Malfray, who would become his masters. This explains the classicism present in works such as "Portrait of Daniele Damboise", where the simplicity of lines and the marble work is reminiscent of Cycladic sculpture and Brancusi.
Marcel Damboise trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseilles, but was forced to leave this institution to become an apprentice stonemason. In 1926 he moved to Paris and shortly afterwards opened a studio in La Ruche, together with his friend the sculptor Louis Dideron. After his marriage to Yvette Dorignac, the youngest daughter of the painter Georges Dorignac, he joined a family of artists. The following year he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and met Paul Cornet, Charles Despiau, Aristide Maillol and Charles Malfray, among others, who became his teachers. He created the Fondouk monument and numerous personal works, which attracted the attention of Albert Camus: the two became well known. During the war, he created a bust of the actor Jean-Louis Barrault, whom he met in the camouflage section. He moved to Algiers for a few years, where he had lived before. Back in Paris, he became a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. At the same time, he became a founding member of the Groupe des Neuf and took part in the following exhibitions: Le groupe des Neuf at the Galerie Vendôme in 1964 and the First Festival of Contemporary Sculpture in Saint-Ouen in 1967.
