Title: Rare. Seldom offered for sale from this artist. Margaret (Peggy) Astor Drayton, of Litchfield, CT; Vero Beach, FL and formerly New York City, peacefully passed away on June 14, 2014. She was 98 years old and lucid and laughing until the day she died. Peggy was born in London, England on December 20th, 1915. Her father, William Astor Drayton, was a great grandson of John Jacob Astor, the English emigrant who created the first corporate trust in America and built a fur trading empire that eventually extended into Canada. In 1942, Peggy became Countess Margaret Reventlow when she married Danish Count Court Haugwitz-Hardenberg Reventlow. In 1974, she started a pilot program of recording books for the blind in Litchfield. This later became known as the Connecticut Volunteer Services for the Blind and Handicapped, for which Peggy was Founder and President until 2011, when she was 95 years old. She was a long-standing member of the Colony Club in New York City. Peggy's mission was to provide blind and handicapped persons with the same range and quality of reading materials available to sighted public library patrons and she tirelessly and selflessly dedicated herself to the pursuit of this mission for 37 years. Peggy was also an exceptionally gifted and internationally recognized sculptress and painter. Her art has been exhibited in New York, Palm Beach, London, Connecticut and Nantucket, including exhibitions at The Alwyn Gallery in London and at Hammer Galleries and at Tiffany and Co. in New York. She is survived by her daughter, Alida "Binky" Albright of Pinehurst, NC and her son Richard Haugwitz-Reventlow of Palm Beach FL.; two granddaughters, Leslie Merrell Zimmerman and her husband Mark of Chapel Hill, NC and Ashley Cox Good of Sydney, Australia and five great-grand children.
