MARITIME FLAGS. Manuscript, 'Libro que contiene las insignias que arbolan los Gefes de las catorse Potencias maritimas, y las Banderas que usan todas las Naciones ultimam[en]te correxidas con sus distinciones de Reinos y Provincias' [A book containing the standards of the chiefs of the fourteen maritime powers, and the flags used by all nations, lately corrected, with their distinctions of kingdoms and provinces], 1791.

In Spanish, title and half-title decorated with maritime scenes and motifs, 80 pages, 235 x 168mm, with depictions of naval ensigns in ink and watercolours, usually two to a page, with captions (general light browning, occasionally more marked, the ink of the captions and borders rather acidified). Contemporary Spanish calf, spine gilt (restored).

A maritime flag-book including early ensigns of the United States. The volume has been somewhat misbound: the admirals' ensigns are depicted (up to eight to each page) on ff.13-15; f.1 is the title, f.12 a second title; ff.2-11 and ff.16-42 depict national, royal, provincial and city ensigns (two to a page), as well as additional flags including those of the Spanish royal posts, the five principal guilds of Madrid, the various national companies of China or the East or West Indies and others. The flags depicted included six early ensigns of the thirteen United States of America, one incorporating the pine-tree and rattlesnake emblems alongside stars and stripes.
