MARITIME - VERY RARE 1st RETALIATORY RATE SAILING COVER SENT WITH EXPERIMENTAL 3d LATE FEE: 24 June 1848 Liverpool to Philadelphia "p. Caledonia via New York" paid with two cut-square 1/- Embossed (one with faults) + 3x 1d red all tied by "466" numerals, with the Retaliatory Rate charge of "58[c]" in blue ms alongside. This is a First Day Cover of the Retaliatory Rates system (whereby this letter was treated as entirely unpaid by the US P.O. and charged accordingly). It is also a rare example of the pre-1849 experimental 3d Late Fee payment. Rare and probably unique.
