Built in 1909, Engine Company No. 44, the firehouse from which the view pictured in the present lot is seen, was converted by Mark Adams and his wife printmaker Beth Van Hoesen into a home and studio designed by the noted architect Albert Lanier, husband of celebrated artist Ruth Asawa. Ruth and Albert regularly joined the weekly drawing sessions hosted by Mark and Beth in the light-filled studio where their circle of friends, which included fellow artists Wayne Thiebaud, William Theophilus Brown and Paul Wonner, among others, took turns modeling.
