MARY CHASE PERRY, PEWABIC POTTERY VASE, FOOTED, C.1903-1904 H 9" DIA 7.5"

Of baluster form with Pewabic white clay body. Copper iridescent glaze over Pewabic "Blue Matte 201" glaze and reduction. Impressed "Pewabic Detroit" mark under two early "Pewabic Detroit" paper labels; one with black letters, the other with sepia letters. Underside also has two paper labels: one reads: "Perry #126", the other reads "CofC 131". Mary Chase Perry's Day Book in the Alfred Street Studio began with #1 in 1903 and went to #600 in 1904. The label inscribed "Perry #126" implies that this work could be one of the firms earliest documented pieces as well as one of Perry's earliest examples of iridescent glaze. Similar examples of these labels can be found on items purchased from Perry by Charles Lang Freer. Provenance: property of a prominent metro Detroit collector of Pewabic Pottery.
