MASK WITH MOVABLE JAW
MASK WITH MOVABLE JAW Mid-20th century. Wood, metal. Dimensions: L. 26 cm. Mask with an articulated lower jaw (metal fastener), attributed either to a Dan or We/Guéré workshop (Ivory Coast/Liberia, gunye ge-type masks) or to the Cross River region (Ibibio/Ejagham, Nigeria, Ekpo society masks); both traditions share this mechanism and a deliberately harsh expression. The forehead is surmounted by a striated crest; the almond-shaped eyes are circled with light ochre (kaolin); the nose is ridge-like; and there is a schematic beard beneath the lower jaw.
