MASS ARMS SMITH PATENT ARTILLERY CARBINE.
Cal. 50. S# 1781 (on action) 3121 (on barrel). Standard configuration with 21-1/2" half round half octagon barrel with locking spring on top. Early boxlock action without hole for sling ring mount has heavy right hand hammer. Marks on left side include "Mass Arms", "Poultney & Trimble", and "Smith's Patent" info. Action and barrel numbers do not match. Walnut stocks are fitted with early type sling loops on toe and barrel band. There is an early adaptation for mounting sling loop on left side of grip near comb for Calvary use (loop not present). CONDITION: fair to good. Metal cleaned to dark gray with silver highlights and has overall salt and pepper appearance. Stocks refinished over many marks and bumps. Bore is good with light pitting. Barrel is slightly loose.
