MATISSE HENRI: (1869-1954)
MATISSE HENRI: (1869-1954) French artist. A wonderful illustrated autograph document signed, Matisse, three pages (separate leaves of feint graph paper, evidently neatly removed from a notebook), Boulevard Montparnasse, Paris, n.d. (1926 or later), in French. Matisse places an order for various artists' materials, including a selection of paints which he specifically lists as ´blanc argent, ocre jaune, ocre rouge, cadmium ou chrome citron, chrome orange, vermillon, terre sienne ord.[inaire], terre sienne brûlée, bleu outremer foncé.....noir d´ivoire´ (Translation: ´silver white, yellow ochre, red ochre, cadmium or lemon chrome, orange chrome, vermilion, ord[inary] sienna, burnt sienna, dark ultramarine blue.....ivory black´), as well as a ´couteau souple´ (Translation: ´flexible knife´), brushes and jars. Matisse has further illustrated his requirements with a series of seven original pen and ink sketches, comprising simple, rapidly executed diagrams of various brushes and implements, including the knife, and a container divided into sections and annotated with fractional measurements, evidently intended to convey to his supplier the particular forms, proportions and capacities of the materials he required. At the base of one page Matisse provides the delivery address in Paris. VG
Matisse acquired an apartment at 132 Boulevard du Montparnasse in Paris in 1926, thereafter retaining it as his Paris residence and studio for many years. The practical nature of the present document, comprising a substantial order for pigments, brushes, implements and other studio equipment, accompanied by Matisse's own explanatory sketches, raises the intriguing possibility that it dates from the period in which he was establishing or equipping his new Montparnasse premises, although a more precise dating cannot presently be established.
