In this work, Maxime Maufra painted the small village of La Martinière, part of the municipality of Le Pellegrin, in the East of Nantes. He captured the summer landscape on canvas with a vivid coloration in an impressive way. Using short, contiguous brushstrokes that only add to a unit in the eye of the beholder, he resolved the formal elements in an impressionist manner.

Der aus Nantes stammende Landschafts-, Figuren- und Stilllebenmaler Maxime Émile Louis Maufra ist der Generation der Postimpressionisten zuzurechnen. Er war mit dem Künstlerkreis um Paul Gauguin und Paul Sérusier bekannt und pflegte losen Kontakt mit den Nabis. 1890 hielt er sich erstmals in der Bretagne auf. Dieses Küstengebiet, das er - wie auch die Normandie - später wiederholt aufsuchte, gehörte zu den zentralen Inspirationsquellen seines künstlerischen Schaffens.

Im vorliegenden Werk widmete sich Maxime Maufra dem kleinen, zur Gemeinde Le Pellegrin im Osten von Nantes zugehörigen Fleck La Martinière. Mit hellem Kolorit bannte er die sommerliche Landschaft eindrucksvoll auf die Leinwand. Die formalen Gegebenheiten löste er in impressionistischer Manier durch kurze, nebeneinander gesetzte Pinselstriche auf, die sich erst im Auge des Betrachters zur stimmigen Einheit fügen.
