MAURICE SENDAK.The Wild Things. Group of 6 framed pencil studies of Max and the Monsters from Sendak's famous children's book Where the Wild Things Are, (New York: Harper & Row, 1963), created for an unrealized commercial project, 1982. Graphite on paper. Each sheet contains two illustrations, together measuring 154x254 mm; 6x10 inches. Each dated and signed by Sendak. Each archivally framed to 150¼x19¼ inches.These lively illustrations, preliminary studies for the main characters from Sendak's children's storybook masterpiece, were created for British patternmaker, Anne Wilkinson, intended for a series of bean bag doll toy patterns. Each sheet shows the front and back of Max, Aaron, Lady/Tzippy, Moishe, Emil the rooster, and Bernard the bull, with carefully rendered details capturing their iconic expressions, movements, and physical characteristics. Prototypes of the toys were created but never manufactured.
