LOT NOTES
MAURICE UTRILLO
French painter who was noted for his depictions of the houses and streets of the Montmartre district of Paris. He is best known for his White Period (190914), during which he used white zinc, sometimes mixed with plaster, to convey the aging walls and deteriorating houses of his cityscapes. The art dealer Paul Guillaume (1891-1934) discovered Utrillos paintings thanks to the poet Max Jacob (1876-1944) who also lived in Montmartre. In 1922 Paul Guillaume finally organized an exhibition of thirty-five of Utrillos works, which brought him great success. The painter was launched, and his works sold for much higher prices. This is known as the painters colored period.
