Medals of Paymaster Commander Francis Henry Stevens M.B.E. M.S.M. R.N.Sold with his silver Bosun's call, engraved silver ships napkin ring, HMS Nelson commemorative 1932-1935 Commission poster, Service Cap, White Gloves and Dress Uniform bullion epaulettes. Plus, several portrait photographs, cuttings and research notes. Born in Portsmouth to a Naval family. Enlisted on 17th November 1902, aged 14. Trained as a Ships Steward aboard the Portsmouth-based accommodation ship HMS Duke of Wellington, the battleship HMS Majestic, the battleship HMS Glory in the Far East, the flagship of the China Station HMS Diadem, the flagship of the 6th Cruiser Squadron HMS Terrible, the battleship HMS Vengeance, the training ships HMS Britannia and HMS Renown, and cruisers HMS Spartiate, HMS Minotaur and HMS Royal Arthur.He moved ashore for the First World War being a Senior Steward in Portsmouth Naval Base 'HMS Victory' until 21st October 1916, when he moved across to Lee-on-Solent and joined HMS Daedalus. He returned to HMS Victory to attend the Stewards Victualling Course and was promoted to Victualling Chief Petty Officer (V. C.P.O.) and posted soon after to HMS Europa. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal while aboard the Mudros Flagship in the Aegean.He returned to Portsmouth in November 1919 and was promoted and redesignated as a Supply Chief Petty Officer on 10th November 1922. He served aboard the battleship HMS Barham from 1922 until 1925. On his return to Portsmouth, he was commissioned a Warranted Supply Officer on 2nd November 1927 and returned aboard HMS Barham. Posted to the new submarine depot ship HMS Medway in 1930, he transferred to the Reserve Fleet the same year. His final seagoing appointment was aboard the battleship HMS Nelson from 1932 to 1934 before returning to Portsmouth's Supply & Secretariat Branch. He retired on 2nd April 1938. Recalled to duty on 27th September of the same year, Promoted to Paymaster Lieutenant Commander on 14th March 1940. He continued to serve until his final discharge on 19th December 1946. For the entire Second World War, he served in the pay office of HMS Europa. The Central Depot for the Royal Naval Patrol Service (RNPS) is located at Sparrows Nest Gardens, Lowestoft.
