S. Historian, J. T. Scharf." Scharf was a historian, author, journalist, antiquarian, politician, lawyer, and CSA soldier and sailor. The Maryland Historical Society holds his massive collection of 18th and 19th century original source material. The higher denomination $8 and $20 notes are by far the most commonly seen from this series.
