Title: MENACE No. 4
Place Published:
Publisher:Atlas [Indicia: Hercules Publishing Corp.]
Date Published: June, 1953
Description:

CGC certified: Good/VG (3.0). Cream to off-white pages. Cover: Bill Everett. Stories and art: Stan Lee, Russ Heath, Joe Maneely, Fred Kita, Bill Everett. GPAnalysis: A 3.0 sold for $144 in September 2020.

Menace was the jewel in the crown of Atlas's hydra-headed horror lineup, featuring some of the publisher's spookiest covers and stories, including Bill Everett's "Zombie!" in the fifth issue (which spawned a short-lived but fondly-remembered black and white Marvel horror mag in the early 1970s).

"Menace was Stan Lee's baby, his attempt to capture what Bill Gaines and Al Feldstein were doing so successfully over at EC: putting out a horror comic book with a small cadre of supremely talented artists, all under the auspices of one editor/writer." — Roy Thomas, 75 Years of Marvel: From the Golden Age to the Silver Screen. Taschen: 2014, p. 133.

A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.

Consignments welcome for PBA's December 2021 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
