Riemann-Reyher assumes that this work comes from one of the sketchbooks from 1860–62 that were not included in the inventory of the Berlin National-Galerie after Menzel’s death in 1906. During those years, Menzel repeatedly chose his niece Margarete and his nephew Otto—who were born in 1860 and 1861, respectively—as subjects for his drawings.
