Pen and ink on cream wove paper, 1963. 457x610 mm; 18x24 inches. Signed, dated "Nov. 1963" and inscribed "New York" in ink, lower left.Provenance: private collection, Germany.This and the following lot are two very scarce works on paper, disturbing and powerful drawings by Mildred Thompson. Early in her career, shortly before her moving back to Germany in 1963, Thompson drew a series of these expressive, figurative works in New York. They express the racism and violence that she encountered in American upon return from a three year course of study at the Art Academy of Hamburg in Germany. While in New York, two etchings were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art and an etching and another 1963 ink drawing by the Brooklyn Museum. Thompson also had two fall fellowships for stay at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire. After three years in the US, Thompson retunred and remained in Germany working as an expatriate artist until 1975, where she developed an important body of work in abstraction in painting, printmaking and sculpture..
