Clipped signature with rank, P.H. Sheridan, M. General U.S.A. 3.25 x 4.75 in. Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888) graduated USMA in 1853. He served as staff officer for Maj. Gen. Henry Halleck In autumn 1861. He so impressed Brig. Gen. W.S. Rosecrans after the Battle of Boonesboro that he rose to Brig. General. After Stones River he was promoted to Major General. When Grant became General-in-Chief of the Armies, Sheridan was brought to the Eastern Theater and put in command of the Army of the Potomac’s Cavalry. While Sherman was carving a path of destruction through Georgia and the adjacent southern states, Grant sent Sheridan through the Shenandoah Valley, an important source of resources and a transportation route for the Confederacy, to render it uninhabitable. In the spring of 1865, it was Sheridan’s forces that pursued Lee and the ANV throughout the East until Lee surrendered at Appomattox in April.
