Description
British military bugle, mid 19th century. Marked with arrow and BO, British Board of Ordnance, used before 1855. 90M marking indicates that the horn belonged to the 90th Regiment of Foot (Pertshire Volunteers) which was active from 1794 to 1881. The regiment participated in the Xhosa War of 1846—1847, as well as the Zulu War of 1879. Both wars in current South Africa.
Enclosed with Plaque inscription: “Looted from Cronjes Laager after Paardeberg 27 th feb 1900”. The shield on the horn indicates that it was looted from Cronje's camp after Paardeberg 27 February 1900. The Battle of Paardeberg (18-27 February 1900) was a battle during the 2nd Boer War of 1899-1902 in which the British under Horatio Herbert Kitchener defeated a Boer army commanded by Piet Cronje.
Manufacturer brand Potter, 2. Bridge St West, London. Henry Potter started manufacturing drums and wind instruments for the British Army in 1811. Operating at Bridge Street Westminster 1841- 1858
