JEAN PETITOT (1607-1691)
Peintre sur émail originaire de Genève, Jean Petitot passe quelques années à la Cour de Charles Ier d'Angleterre, ayant un logement officiel à Whitehall. Il part en France pour fuir la Révolution et devient le peintre officiel de Louis XIV. Il loge au Louvre et reste au service du roi pendant trente-six ans.
Cette miniature avec le portrait du souverain devait très probablement orner à l'origine une boîte à portrait conçue avec des coffrets, cadeaux diplomatiques par excellence au XVIIème siècle. Plus de trois cents sont ainsi répertoriées dans les registres des Présents du Roi mais peu ont survécu. Citons par exemple une boîte à portrait avec sa monture, vente collection Yves Saint-Laurent et Pierre Bergé, Christie's Paris, 24 février 2009, lot 120, maintenant conservée au musée du Louvre.
An enamel painter from Geneva, Jean Petitot spent a few years at the Court of Charles I of England with an official dwelling in Whitehall. Petitot went to France to escape the Revolution and became the official painter of Louis XIV. He stayed at the Louvre and served the King for 36 years.
This miniature with the portrait of the King was originally adorned with a portrait box designed with boxes and diplomatic gifts in the early 17th century. More than 300 are listed as Presents of the King but few have survived. For example a portrait box with its mount (sale collection Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé, Christie’s Paris, February 24, 2009, lot 120) is now kept at the Louvre Museum.
