A Bronze Slender Ovoid Vase Converted into an Oil Lamp
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Cast in shades of bronze with gilt overlay, the body inset with two panels in the form of an elaborately tasselled, open scroll, one side depicting geese on the shores of a river beside reeds and flowering aoi (hollyhock), the other side with the poet Ariwara no Narihira on horseback accompanied by his retinue riding past hagi (bush clover) growing beside a river, reserved on a ground of a flock of cranes in flight, the shoulder applied with two handles in the form of a mythological beast, the whole raised on an integral stand with five cabriole feet, signed Miyao tsukuru within a gilt rectangular cartouche; with a blown glass shade and chimney. 88.5cm (34 7/8in) high.
