MOHANDAS K. GANDHI'S EYEGLASSES, EX-LATTIMER.

[ translate ]

Mohandas K. Gandhi was an Indian nationalist and spiritual leader who lived from 1869-1948. Considered the father of his country, Gandhi's philosophy of passive resistance and non-violence set the stage for the British withdrawal from India, resulting in the country's independence. This artifact is most important and comes in the form of tortoise-shell eyeglasses with circular lenses and straight arms, contained in a period case. The glasses were owned by Gandhi and given to his friend and political associate U Maung Maung Ji (1900-1973), Burmese Diplomat, member of the Anti-Separation League, and a member, with Gandhi and Nehru, of the All India Congress Committee. These glasses were auctioned at Alexander Autographs Inc. and purchased by Dr. John K. Lattimer. Reference to these glasses was made in a letter from producer Richard Attenborough to Maung Ji's widow in 1981, and the dossier and glasses were originally obtained from Maung-Ji's estate. The glasses were also sold with several letters from Jawaharlal Nehru, U Thant, and Richard Attenborough as well as photographs and related documents which were separated from the glasses before their consignment to Morphy Auctions. The glasses are accompanied by their original auction description and a letter addressed to Dr. Lattimer regarding the sale. The glasses remain intact with a nice patina. Case exhibits handling wear. CONDITION: Good. Paperwork: Original Description
