MOHANDAS K. GANDHI'S FOUNTAIN PEN, EX-LATTIMER.

Mohandas K. Gandhi was an Indian nationalist and spiritual leader who lived from 1869-1948. Considered the father of his country, Gandhi's philosophy of passive resistance and non-violence set the stage for the British withdrawal from India, resulting in the country's independence. This artifact is most important and comes in the form of a "Swan" fountain pen with a wide brass nib, composition body, with herringbone pattern and gilt clip, contained in the maker's cardboard box. The pen was given by Gandhi to his friend and political associate U Maung Maung Ji (1900-1973), Burmese Diplomat, member of the Anti-Separation League, and a member, with Gandhi and Nehru, in the All India Congress Committee. This pen was auctioned at Alexander Autographs Inc. and purchased by Dr. John K. Lattimer. Reference to the pen was made in a letter from producer Richard Attenborough to Maung Ji's widow in 1981, and the dossier and glasses were originally obtained from Maung-Ji's estate. The pen was sold in the same auction as Gandhi's glasses, which are also offered in this sale. The pen is accompanied by its original auction description and a folder with Lattimer's handwriting.
