MOLIÈRE De vrék, blyspél, uit het Fransch [...]. Amsterdam A. Magnus 1685 8vo: 111 pp. (some light marg. spotting on ff. A1, G7-8, sl. toned). 20th-c. Jansenist red morocco signed Brochard, gilt title on flat spine, red morocco doublures orn. with rich gilt dentelle, marbled flyleaves, a.e.g.(sl. faded spine). First Dutch translation of "L'Avare ou L'école du mensonge" (The Miser, first played in 1668), by Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, "Molière" (1622-1673). Engr. title-p. with allegorical vignette "Yver in liefd bloeyende" with a bee hive and the Amsterdam coat of arms. The translator, the Dutch poet, playwright, and director of the Amsterdam Schouwburg (Municipal Theatre), Joan Pluimer (c. 1647-1719) invented new Dutch names for most, but not all characters.
