MONASTIC GALANTRY (La) or Informal Conversations Among Monks and Nuns....
MONASTIC GALANTRY (La) or Informal Conversations Among Monks and Nuns. Newly expanded to include several fine tales. Neuf-Chatel [à la Sphère], published by L'Amant oisif, n.d. [circa 1680]. In-12, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, smooth decorated spine, interior roulette, gilt edges on marbled paper (18th-century binding).
First edition (?) of these confessions of a lover, adorned with a copperplate engraving depicting him in the parlor with a nun. (Gay-Lemonnyer, vol. II, col. 373.)
I had spent my early years in the company of countless young ladies, with whom I frolicked ceaselessly [...] My passions were barely awakening when, at the urging of my mother—who foresaw that I would certainly not be averse to the fair sex—I rashly sacrificed my ardor to the mortifications of a convent (pp. 1–2).
On p. 171, there is an invective against the monastic cloister.
An old handwritten ex-libris on the title page.
Copy in a binding attributable to Derome. It should be noted that Nodier (1829, no. 625) owned a copy of this very rare book.
Repair on the reverse side of folio H12. Foxing and small water stains, ink stains on the binding covers.
