MONUMENTAL CARVED DURFEE TUBE GRANDFATHER CLOCK

[ translate ]

This clock was rumored to be built as a wedding present to Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. at the time of his wedding to Elizabeth Sully in 1905. It is the only one of its kind. The case is of circassian walnut, built and carved by I. Kimball of Boston. The arch over the hood depicts cupids, cherubs and garlands of flowers. The crown of the hood is supported by Pan with cloven hooves. In the middle section under the clock face is a Mephisto head, above the beveled glass door. The stepback ofthe center section has rams heads at each corner and at the base section squatting lions. The clock mechanism is a very heavy brass, activated by three weights of varying sizes. The pendulum is a Graham type filled with mercury. The chimes are Westminister and Whittington, and consist of nine graduated tubes. The face is heavy gold plated filligreed. Signed Durfee tubes. The paperwork that we are providing with the clock has not been verified by S&S Auction. It is the buyers responsibility to decide if it is correct or not. 116 1/2" h x 30" w x 18 1/2" d.
Condition Report: Minor finish loss. We did not find the Durfee signature on the movement. We still believe as to the letter from the Durfee Clock Company that they produced this clock.
