The Major's mags, pre-Detective Comics, often looked back with nostalgia at a simpler, more bucolic America, possibly in reaction to the ill-winds blowing across Europe. Detective Comics, with its hardbitten hoodlums and no-nonsense pug-pounder Slam Bradley, finally brought a wised-up city vibe to the Major's output — just in time for city sharpers Donenfeld and Liebowitz to pluck the Major's publishing enterprise away, with the merciless avarice of a pickpocket fleecing a rube.****************************************
