Description:

MORGAN, JOHN PIERPONT
Typed letter signed. On 23 Wall Street, New York stationery, letter dated February 5, 1915, addressed to A.[lphonso] T.[rumphour] Clearwater. 10 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches (26 x 21.5 cm); single page typed in purple ink; together with a carbon of Clearwater's letter of February 4, to which he was replying. Usual folds, a soft crease at upper right, two short marginal tears of about 1 cm, signature weak or somewhat faded.

Judge Clearwater had written to Morgan "tendering my congratulations upon your attitude before the Commission on Industrial Relations..." This was the Walsh Commission, created by Congress to examine US labor law. This resulted in a good deal of dissension, both within and without the Commission, at a time when relations between labor and capital were deeply riven, in the aftermath of (for example) the Ludlow Massacre. Morgan had been angered by the attitude of Walsh, and had been publicly criticized for his testimony on wages and his demeanor before the Committee.
