[MORTIER, Pieter (1661-1711).] Le Royaume d'Escosse Divisé en Parties Septentrionale & Meridionale. Paris: H. Jaillot, 1696 [but Amsterdam: Pieter Mortier, 1696].

Impressive large map of Scotland, beautifully hand-coloured by a contemporary hand. Although his name does not appear on the map, this is in fact one of Mortier's piracies. Adrien and Guillaume Sanson reworked the maps of Nicolas Sanson for inclusion in Jaillot's Atlas Nouveau of 1681, 1684 and 1689. However, this was counterfeited by Mortier, who published this map in Amsterdam in 1696. Pastoureau, Jaillot, I F, 83 (but not dated).

Large double-page engraved map, contemporary colour, lavishly applied in outline politically and around the sea coasts, verso blank, title and scale with very elaborate cartouches, the former bearing the royal arms of Scotland, the latter with a sea-shell rococo frame, 890 x 592mm (plate mark), 945 x 620mm (sheet).
