Tamir was born in Odessa and completed his studies at Israel’s Bezalel Academy of Art in 1947. He graduated in 1952 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he specialized in fresco and monumental painting and was chosen by his teacher, the renowned fresco artist Prozzo Parchi, to become his assistant painting murals at the Church of St. Eugenio in Rome.
Tamir moved to Montparnasse in Paris in 1954 where he lived and worked alongside Constantin Brancusi, Jean Tinguely and Jean Dubuffet, whilst studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He developed 'New Figuration' in his paintings, with shapes and mythological images in thick, colourful layers of paint. In 1958 he exhibited at the Musée Nationale d'Art Moderne in Paris, was voted one of the top twenty young artists in Europe and won the Young Artist Award in Israel.
Condition Report:
This is in its original condition, on the original canvas; the paint is very thick, thick impasto which is in keeping with the artist's technique; the white wooden frame is equally original; overall time patina, a little surface dirt which might benefit from a light clean but not necessary as the colours are bold and vibrant; in very good original condition.
