MOVING HOLOCAUST ERA LETTER FROM RABBI DAVID SCHLISSEL, ROSH BETH DIN OF MUNKACZ, TO RABBI ELIEZER SILVER, PRESIDENT OF AGUDAS HARABBANIM IN AMERICA. HANDWRITTEN SIGNED LETTER.

Letter written by the famous gaon Rabbi David Schlissel, Rosh Beth Din of Munkacz and author of Imrei David, to Rabbi Eliezer Silver. The letter was written just four months before his passing in Adar 1944, and describes the suffering of the Jews of Munkacz shortly before the destruction of the community in the Holocaust.

In the first part of the letter, Rabbi Schlissel appeals to Rabbi Eliezer Silver for financial support, to relieve his suffering from illness and poverty. The second part of the letter appeals to Rabbi Silver to enable his son Rabbi Natta Shlomo, Dayan of Munkacz, to emigrate to the US. ‘As I see it, it is not in his interests to stay here - where Jewish honour has been trampled to the depths. If he were in America, he would enlighten the exile with his great talents and outstanding pearls of wisdom.’ This plan did not come to fruition and Rabbi Natta Shlomo perished in the Holocaust.

Rabbi David Schlissel (1864-1944), born in Sanz, where already in his youth he was favoured by the Divrei Chaim and recognised for his greatness in Torah. Rosh Beth Din of Zborow (1884) and Munkacz (1922), also heading a Yeshiva there. Author of Imrei David, Beis David and Gan David.

Rabbi Eliezer Silver (1882-1968), studied in Dvinsk under the Or Sameach and the Rogatchover Gaon, before studying at the Yeshiva of Volozhin, under Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzenski and Rabbi Chaim Soloweichik of Brisk. Settled in America in 1906, and appointed Rabbi of Harrisburg, Springfield (1925) and Cincinnati (1931). Established Ezras Torah to support rabbinical scholars suffering form the effects of WWI. Leading and active American rabbinical figure and President of Agudas Harabbanim. Author of Anfei Erez.
