Tasting Notes
Colour: Dark Amber
Nose: A bouquet of dark fruits: plums and currants, stewed and jammy with a wonderful scent of citrus oils bringing freshness to the more mature notes brought on by the long maturation.
Palate: An unctuous, viscous texture coats the mouth with a rather meaty, grippy mouthfeel. Dark chocolate and savoury, earthy notes of leather, beeswax polish and cigar box follow and then the compote of dark fruits is back, this time with uplifting bursts of sweet raisin and baking spices. You can feel the oak in the background but there is no hint of bitterness. The alcohol is still very high for a whisky of this age, suggesting the palate will mellow and develop further with additional ageing.
Finish: This lingers long on the palate with a spicy edge. The oak is subtly present, balancing the flavours together in perfect harmony. A fantastic example of a 33 year old Macallan butt, vibrant and rich - suitable for bottling now, or with plenty of scope for further ageing.
