A black and white photograph of Madame Chiang Kai-shek signed in both Chinese and English. Measuring 8" x 10", n.p. [Washington, D.C.], n.d. [ca. February 1943]. An attractive, cropped portrait of Soong Mei-ling, also known as Madame Chiang Kai-shek. Signed in Chinese in black felt tip at the left margin, and again in English, ?May Ling Song Chiang? at the bottom margin. Minor bends and scattered light soiling. Boldly signed. With an identification notation on verso. Fine condition. With an LOA from PSA.

Soong Mei-ling (1898-2003) was First Lady of the Republic of China and the wife of President Chiang Kai-shek. Soong played a prominent role in Chinese politics and rallied against the Japanese during the Second World War. In 1943, the year this photograph was taken, she conducted an eight-month speaking tour of the United States to lobby foreign aid for the war effort. On February 18, 1943, she delivered a speech to the House members - becoming the first woman to address a "congressional reception." That same year she made the cover of Time magazine.
