An Augsburg Baroque silver beaker of Raphael v. Gottrau
Tapering beaker with a moulded rim on three spherical supports. With repoussé fruit garlands surrounding three medallions bearing portraits of Roman emperors. The lid with corresponding decor and a spherical finial, the inside set with a plaque engraved with the arms of Abbot Raphael von Gottrau and inscribed "MON : EINSIDLEN . RAPHAEL . ABB :" H 19.5 cm, weight 507 g.
Marks of Johann I Drentwett, 1689 - 92.
Raphael von Gottrau from Freiburg (1647 – 1707) was abbot of the Swiss abbey of Einsiedeln from 1692 – 98. His coat-of-arms can today be seen above the doorway of the nearby chapel of Meinrad, which he consecrated in 1698.
