Madison & Monroe (4) Period Clerical Copies of Appts, Incl. Two For Texas Revolutionary John T. Mason
MD
A bound set of manuscript documents containing four federal appointments by James Madison and James Monroe, including two for Texas revolutionary John T. Mason (1787-1850). 4pp, 8.25" x 13.5", Washington, D.C., 1815-1822. Each document is a period clerical copy of an official presidential appointment, signed and accomplished by a secretary. Docketed "A" on the verso of the last page, suggesting a particular filing convention. Exhibits uneven toning and faint spot staining throughout; intermittent soiling. Light tearing at margins. Otherwise, very good. An unusual collection worthy of further research!
The lot includes:
- 1p appointment of John T. Mason as Marshal of Kentucky, Washington, D.C., January 9, 1822. Secretarially signed by James Monroe as President and John Quincy Adams as Secretary of State.
- 1p appointment of John T. Mason as Marshal of Kentucky, Washington, D.C., December 16, 1817. Secretarially signed by James Monroe as President and John Quincy Adams as Secretary of State.
- 1p appointment of Joseph Anderson as Comptroller of the Treasury, Washington, D.C., February 28, 1815. Secretarially signed by James Madison as President and James Monroe as Secretary of State.
- 1p appointment of William H. Crawford as Secretary of the Treasury, Washington, D.C., March 5, 1817. Secretarially signed by James Monroe as President.
Of the three appointees named within this collection, John T. Mason is perhaps the most colorful. After completing his second term as Marshal, Mason was named Secretary of Michigan Territory by Andrew Jackson, and later became a prominent land agent and supporter of the Texas Revolution. William H. Crawford (1772-1834) not only served as Secretary of the Treasury but also as Madison's Secretary of War and Ambassador to France. Before Madison appointed Joseph Anderson (1757-1837) Comptroller of the Treasury, the Tennessean had served in the Senate from 1797 to 1815. He remained in office until 1836.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
