Madonna and Child. Carved and polychromed wooden
Madonna and Child. Carved and polychromed wooden sculpture. Hispanic Flemish School. Gothic. 15th century.
Delicate representation of the Madonna and Child. Far from the rigid and severe Romanesque canon, it is in the Gothic period that the Virgin Mary acquired her prominence, especially with the Christ Child. She is usually depicted, as in this case, as an idealised young maiden / mother, with a sweet expression, smiling lovingly at Jesus in her arms, very much humanised.
The Child, in movement, holds the orb in his left hand and gives blessing with the right.
93 x 30 x 26 cm.
