Madonna and child, Sculpture (1) - Renaissance - Wood - Early 16th century

This beautiful, polychrome, wooden sculpture from the early XVI century, depicts "Madonna in trono con Bambino". The Virgin Mary wears a tiara on her head and is wrapped in sumptuous Renaissance robes; she is portrayed holding Baby Jesus. Both figures show their front to the bystander. The Virgin Mary holds a pear in her right hand, while the Child raises two fingers of his right hand in a blessing gesture. The sculpture is very peculiar; it is not made from a single wooden block, the two figures are detached instead and placed one behind the other to make them look more realistic and to give more depth. Not surprisingly, it is right during the Renaissance that the great artists refine their studies on perspective. The sculpture is in very good state of preservation, with original polychromy.
