Madonna and child enthroned with Saint Nicholas of Tolentino and Saint Sebastian, Master of the Maddalena Assunta

[ translate ]

Property from the Collection of Jacques Goudstikker
Master of the Maddalena Assunta
active in Ferrara in the early 16th century
Madonna and child enthroned with Saint Nicholas of Tolentino and Saint Sebastian

oil on panel
panel: 14¾ by 11⅝ in.; 37.5 by 29.5 cm.
framed: 23⅜ by 18⅝ in.; 59.4 by 47.3 cm.

Condition Report:
The panel is uncradled and stable. It has a very slight vertical bow. The painting has not been recently restored. The image reads strongly beneath a slightly dirty varnish. The colors remain vibrant and some of the details well preserved. Inspection under UV reveals some finely applied spots of retouching scattered in the figures and the background, some of which have slightly discolored and are visible to the naked eye. These seem to have largely been to address some fine stable craquelure in the surface of the paint. There are a few strokes in the Christ Child, though he Virgin appears largely untouched, although the blues of her drapery have lost some definition, as consistent with the painting's age. More concentrated spots of retouching are visible in the face and upper chest of St. Sebastian, as well as some broader strokes of strengthening in the dark cloak of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino. Scattered spots of fine and cosmetic retouching only here and there in the background and sky, for example in the upper left corner. Offered in a carved wood tabernacle frame.
