Technique: Tempera and gold background on wood\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 55. 5_36_4_cm
Senese Master of the XIII-XIV century, follower of Duccio di Boninsegna, already identified with Ugolino di Nerio, Madonna with child, tempera and gold background on wood, dimensions 55. 5 x 36 cm. Work of the early fourteenth century, with extensive restorations and extensive repaintings of the nineteenth century, an aspect taken into consideration in the definition of the reserve price. Authenticity documents and critical studies: - Authentication and critical study by prof. Rolando Bellini, 2020. - Publication in the catalog of Phillips Son & Neale, April 1991, as "Follower of Ugolino di Nerio", lot 181, estimate 25 - 30,000 pounds, auction Fine Old Master Paintings: To be Sold by Auction Tuesday, 16 April 1991 at 11 Am and 2. 30 Pm by Phillips Son & Neale (London, England) . The catalog of the aforementioned auction has been digitized by the University of Michigan and is accessible online via the Google Books search engine by typing the indicated parameters. The work has multiple stylistic and iconographic characteristics that place it among the followers of Duccio di Boninsegna, a famous Sienese painter of the late thirteenth century. In particular, the work shows a direct and unequivocal relationship with two masterpieces certainly attributed to the hand of Duccio: the Madonna di Crevole, dating from 1283-84 (coming from the Pieve di Santa Cecilia in Crevole, now preserved in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Siena) and the Madonna Gualino, dating from 1280-83 (preserved in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin) . The fundamental element that unites these works is the almost identical reproduction of the features of the face of the Child Jesus, such as to suggest the use of the same preparatory drawings, a common operation and also attested in the workshops of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries [photographic comparison shown here among the photos: on the left the Child of the Madonna di Crevole] . The work has two series of restorations with extensive repainting: the first intervention is probably from the nineteenth century, the second dates back to the mid-twentieth century. The oldest intervention takes the form of an almost total repainting of the mantle and the dark backgrounds, while the light backgrounds and complexions are affected by more limited surface shots. The restoration of the 1900s, on the other hand, is carried out with the dotted technique and is clearly visible in the photograph, in particular in some portions near the halo. It replenishes some limited color losses. The wooden support is entirely original and the restorations of the pictorial surface are all perfectly identifiable through diagnostics. The work has obtained the certificate of free international circulation and can be sold all over the world. Work with Certificate of Authenticity and Legitimate Origin. The work is shipped by express courier 24/48 hours with INSURANCE. Customers wishing to receive a registered invoice are reminded to provide their TAX CODE for issuing the electronic invoice by sending a message immediately after payment.
