17th century master, Saint Francis de Sales, oil on canvas, dimensions 73 x 58 cm. This intense portrait of Saint Francis de Sales was almost certainly born in the 1860s, that is, in the decade of the beatification and sanctification of the bishop of Geneva. It was typical, in fact, that after the canonization many portraits of the new saints were born. In this case we are probably dealing with the work of an artist of Northern Italian or even more easily French origin. The pictorial quality is high and the very traditional setting suggests a master of solid training. The work is in good condition.
