Magna Graecia Campanian Pottery Lidded Pyxis

Magna Graecia, Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery pyxis used for holding personal trinkets and other petite items. The lower body has a broad rim atop a flared foot as well as a tall neck meant to receive the bell-shaped lid, which displays convex walls, a flared rim, and a rounded top. A lovely, impressed target motif adorns the top of the convex lid, while the entirety of the piece is enveloped in a black glaze. Size: 3.1" in diameter x 3.3" H (7.9 cm x 8.4 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private T.G. collection, Williston, Florida, USA, #2944, acquired in 2000

Condition Report: Lid is stuck to bowl. Chip to rim of lid. Expected nicks and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with great remains of pigment.
