Breathtaking, EDO period Buddhist Butsudan with the statue of Amida Buddha 阿弥陀仏 accompanied on the doors by Seishi Bosatsu 勢至菩薩 (representing wisdom) on the right and Kannon Bosatsu 菩薩 (representing compassion) on the left Japan, ca. 1800 Huge gilt wooden altar: 62 cm! Amida, Buddha of infinite light and life, is depicted in standing position with its hands in Vitarka Mudra. The meaning of this gesture is that wisdom is accessible to all. A very rare Japanese Buddhist shrine in remarkable condition. See for example the fine Lotus throne and mandorla. Dimensions butsudan approx. : 62cm high, 47cm wide (open) , 22cm wide (closed) and 17cm deep. Dimensions Amida approx. : 52cm high, 18cm wide and 12cm deep.
