Magnus
Magnus MAGNUS The 110 Pills, Albin Michel 1986 Original half-page spread No. 22, previously published in *L'Écho des Savanes* in 1985–1986. The speech bubbles were added to the artwork. Signed. India ink on paper 35 × 24.9 cm (13.78 × 9.8 in.) It is little known that *The 110 Pills* is based on a 16th-century Chinese literary classic, *Jin Ping Mei*, which contains explicitly erotic passages. This comic book masterpiece is by Roberto Raviola, alias Magnus. It tells the story of how the apothecary Hsi-Meng Sen receives 110 pills from a monk—a precursor to Viagra—that increase his sexual potency tenfold... In this panel, with its impeccable inking, we see the full extent of Magnus’s artistry, precise in every detail, both in the settings and in the depiction of his dreamlike creatures.
