Maharajah Umaid Singh of Jodhpur (reg. 1918-47) seated in a throne chair

After succeeding to the throne in 1918 (though with his granduncle as regent until 1923), Maharajah Umaid Singh served as aide-de-camp to the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in 1922. He had a successful military career, and was also responsible for reforms to various arms of the state of Jodhpur, including the armed forces, the law and pensions and welfare. He died from an acute attack of appendicitis while on a tiger hunt, aged only 43.
