First edition of the sermons of the Franciscan maverick Olivier Maillard. Described as "one of the oddest, yet most learned divines that ever adorned the Gallican pulpit" (Jackson), the Breton Maillard was famous for the directness of his preaching style (and of his opposition to Louis XI). Three parts in one, chancery quarto (196 x 137mm). 326 leaves (of 328, without final blanks of parts II and III). Woodcut initials (first leaf strengthened, very faint edge dampstaining, small marginal repair, some sheets toned). 18th-century French red morocco gilt, edges gilt. Provenance: some marginalia (faded, some trimmed).
