Malachite Shilu Cu-Fe Mine, Yangchun Co., Yangjiang, Guangdong, China 17.7 x 2.5 x 1.9 cm (6.97 x 0.98 x 0.75 in) This well-formed Malachite stalactite comes from the historic Shil Cu-Fe Mine, where mining activity dates back nearly 2,000 years. Measuring 17.7 centimeters in length, the stalactite is covered from end to end with rounded botryoidal growths that create a richly textured surface. The Malachite is composed of fine, deep velvet-green microcrystals that give much of the specimen a soft, glossy appearance, while brighter green underlying layers are exposed in places, adding subtle contrast. The base of the stalactite provides an excellent view of its concentric internal growth structure and hollow central core. From the collection of John Warn [CHI2165a].
