THE UNIQUE USAGE FROM SINGAPORE OF A COVER FRANKED WITH ALL FOUR VALUES OF THE INDIA 1854 ISSUE1855 (2 DEC) small neat cover from SINGAPORE to New Ross, Ireland, with embossed "PER OVERLAND VIA SOUTHAMPTON" in red at upper left, franked on face at 10a by India 1854 4a blue and red (Head Die I, cut to shape), ½a blue Die I (x2), 1a red Die II and 2a green (x2), variable margins, cancelled or tied by clear individual strikes of diamond of dots, and showing on face red crayon "1/", framed "INDIA PAID" h/s and indistinct London transit cds (which ties the 4a and one ½a). On the reverse "SINGAPORE / P.O." despatch cds, green transit cds and "NEW ROSS" arrival cds dated "FE 22 1856". Typical minor blemishes mentioned for strict accuracy, but of no significance, for this unique and spectacular cover, being the only extant franking from the Straits Settlements with ALL FOUR VALUES of the India 1854 issue. SG Z60, Z62, Z64, Z65. A truly wonderful exhibition item of unparalleled importance. Previously in the Peng Hian Tay Grand Prix award winning collection (Feldman 11 Nov 1986, lot 60094), and not seen on the market for nearly 25 years ( Spink Singapore 24 June 2000, lot 79)Only three other covers exist with the complete set of four India 1854 values, all used from India itself. These may be listed as 1) 1855 (Nov 30) entire from Bombay to Canton, China, with ½a (2), 1a, 2a and 4a , ex "Magnolia" (Siegel 11 May 2023, lot 115) ; 2) 1856 (April 1) large part cover from Chingleput to London with ½a (11), 1a (8), 2a and 4a, the franking not complete, ex Frenkle and "Magnolia" (Siegel 11 May 2023, lot 140) ; 3) 1855 cover from an unknown location to Ireland with ½a (2), 1a (2), 2a and 4a, ex "Emerald" and Spink 2011 sale. The last of these three realised £100,000 + Buyer's Premium (Estimate 80000 GBP)
