Mali, Bamana Peoples, Komo Society Helmet Crest (komokun), Ca. 19th - 20th C., W 12" L 25" Depth 12" | Komo society masks (komokun) combine the features of multiple animals, often the most terrifying animals found in the wilderness. Along with the thick patina of powerful materials, the komokun is as much an altar as it is a mask, all symbols of the Komo society's ability to identify malevolent forces, hunt down criminals, and provide individuals solutions to their problems. Komo society masks usually contain additional elements such animal horns, tusks, porcupine quills, bird skulls, feathers, and textiles. This mask has numerous holes on the top that may have once contained elements such as these, but may have been removed, possibly to remove any spiritual power the mask once held.

Condition Report: Condition is consistent with age and use. Crack/gouge on top of head, and small crack at bottom of nose on edge of mouth. Some overall losses to patina.
